DSG gearbox is the abbreviation of direct shift gearbox and is known as dual-clutch gearbox. The advantage of dual-clutch DSG transmissions is that gears can be changed faster than other gear transmissions. DSG transmission is an automatic transmission type. First tried by Volkswagen and Audi brands, the DSG Transmission has subsequently been used by companies such as Mitsubishi, Nissan, BMW and Porsche.

Dual-clutch cars do not have a clutch pedal like other automatic transmission vehicles. Because in these vehicles, the clutch is realized and disengaged automatically. Many dual-clutch transmissions have a conventional P-R-N-D or P-R-N-D-S (Sport) automatic shift pattern. While the car is in Drive and Sport modes; The dual-clutch transmission acts just like an automatic transmission.

DSG Gearbox Working Principle

DSG transmissions classify the gears with the double clutch in their body, allowing each gear number to be separated as odd and even. The first clutch is connected to odd-numbered gears, while the second clutch is connected to even-numbered gears. For example, in the 6-speed DSG gearbox, 1st, 3rd, 5th gears work with the first clutch, while the 2nd, 4th and 6th gears work with the second clutch. This allows the driver to make gear shifts quickly without being felt. In other words, the next gear is waiting in a ready state before the transitions are made. In this way, gear shifts take place in milliseconds.

What are the DSG Transmission Drive Modes and What are the Differences?

There are three different driving options: DSG, Sport mode, Drive mode and Manual mode.

I – What is Drive Mode?

Drive mode is designed for normal quiet use. It prevents the engine speed from getting too high by changing the gear shifts earlier. The low-speed operation of the engine not only saves fuel, but also reduces the sound level to a minimum. While the number of gears is reduced in proportion to the speed of traditional fully automatic transmission vehicles, the DSG gearbox also continuously increases the number of gears when acceleration occurs and the stationary state is reached.

II – What is Sport Mode?

In Sport mode, the vehicle’s accelerator pedal reactions become more sensitive, keeping the engine’s power band short. Gear shifts take place at higher revs, allowing more use of the engine’s power. In this way, both the engine noise will increase and the response time will be shortened due to its operation at high revs. In addition, when the car is in sport mode, the transmission behaves more aggressively during the downshifting phase, resulting in less accelerator pedal pressure.

III – What is Manual Mode?

As with other automatic transmission types, it provides manual operation. The driver can switch gears from the paddle shift behind the steering wheel or from the “+/-” positions on the gear lever. By not leaving the DSG protection and double clutch event even if you are in control, the brain intervenes in late gear changes and makes the gear shifts automatically. In other words, if gear shifts are forgotten while in manual mode, the vehicle will change gears on its own.

It is marketed with claims that it can change gears faster than a human, that the engine-wheel connection is fluid-free, so it will provide more economical use. It is a type of transmission with the fastest shifts on the market. It has a great advantage in sportive use thanks to its uninterrupted power transmission.
